Instant Disscussion

Post by shadowlanc17 » Thu Jan 03, 2008 4:41 am

I think that an instant message chat built into NO would maybe help speed up
site traffic. There are many sites that offer free group based chat that can
easily be archived in the NO forum for the people who did not get to view the
discussion live or just want to get some information faster than asking for it.
Here are a few sites that might be of interest for an admin to check out:

I think it still has a chance to get back on its feet. Maybe more ads in other forums?

An IRC channel on a server such as SlashNet.org? (same as totse uses)

It has a lot of good server side features such as IP cloaking and a working nickserv.

Also you could use the jIRC client like totse does so that people can access it from the website.

The problem with external chat services is that it leaves logs of our discussions in places where there really shouldn't be. It would be great for us to use phpmychat, but I lack the technical knowledge to install and configure it.

...Anyone know PHP?

EDIT: Oh, and I can't set up an IRC server from my current location, because there's no way I could keep an eye on it (or indeed connect at all).

I wish I could help but I am very slowly learning it by experience and I don't think I can help with my current knowledge of php.(not very much)

Consider #totse on slashnet.org.

They've had no trouble from anybody and totsean talk is often of a much morfe serious matter lol.

If you did decide to run an irc server you could connect to it using a random webirc service like mibit or ircatwork

Nobody takes TOTSE seriously, and they have money for protection (ie, a lawyer). I do not, and I really hate gambling.

The first order of business, I think, is to draw back the users lost in the Great Diaspora, as it were. Then, we can worry about smaller things like chat.

I will try my hand at installing phpmychat, if possible.
