Newcomers Guide to NO Jargon

Post by Xanatos » Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:12 am

When we operators share techniques and stories we tend to use 'nightspeak', certain words and phrases that might be unknown to newcomers (and myself, occasionally). Some are self-explanitory, such as B&E, whilst others are a bit more difficult to grasp. This thread should serve as a "NO Dictionary" to operator jargon, including some military terminology. In no particular order:

B&E: Fairly simple, it stands for 'Breaking & Entering'.
BDU: Battle Dress Uniform, refers to mil-spec camoflauge. Patterns vary; tigerstripe, multicam, woodland, etc.
DPM: Disruptive Pattern Material, more specifically refering to British BDUs.
Carding: A method of entry by sliding a thin, strong piece of material (most commonly a credit card) between the lock and door frame. See link below for a more detailed explanation...

K9: Short for 'canine', refers to guard dogs and police search dogs in particular.
Op/OP: Short for 'operation' and 'Observation Post', respectively.
Book it/Leg it: Refers to running away in a hurry, usually for long distances.
Infil: Short for 'infiltrate', basically getting into an area without being seen.
Exfil: Short for 'exfiltrate', basically getting out of an area without being seen.
Loot: Items of value stolen whilst on an operation.
Car Shopping: Going through people's cars without their permission looking for items to steal.
UE/UrbEx: Urban exploration, see link below...

Code: Select all

NO: Night Ops (duh). Like urban exploration, but is usually conducted at night in areas that are still occupied. The main purpose of NO is to infiltrate an area, explore the place and exfiltrate without leaving any trace.
BO: Black Ops. Like NO, but with the intention of causing damage to someone/something or theft. Generally illegal activities aside from tresspass.
Blues: Police, "blue uniforms".

That's all I can think of for now, if anyone has any others please feel free to help out.

Knowledge alone is not power, it is the potential for power. That potential can only be unlocked through applying that knowledge and realizing the skill.

Quadrupedal Movement; using all four limbs to move (not just the legs). Useful for navigating certain obstacles, moving behind low cover and a great way to excersise (such as QMing up/down staircases). QM is used frequently in Parkour as the hands are often used to bypass obstacles through vaulting etc.

Combats: Combat boots; good protection but can be a little loud.

Picks: Lockpicks; small tools designed to open locks without the appropriate key.

Rus: Rusack, common bag used on ops to carry loot or equipment.

Tactical/Social: In the context of camoflauge, these refer to two main forms of attire. A tactical outfit usually consists of BDUs, combat/tabi boots, load-bearing vests, combat gloves, masks and other garb. These provide good camoflauge and protection (as well as other advantages) but they look suspicious in public so they're normally carried to the AO and changed into on-site. Social camoflauge consists of regular bits of clothing such as dark pants, sneakers, hoodies, concealable masks (such as balaclavas, shemaghs and t-shirts) and other socially-acceptable bits of attire. While this means it's easier to wear your opping outfit to your AO, they generally don't have that many pockets and/or concealment properties, but the differences between tactical-social are usually only marginal.

Radio/scanner: Refers to walkie-talkies (for team communication) and police scanners respectively. Normally used in team-based operations.
