YouTube Channel Dump: Pen Testing, Locks

Post by Psychlonic » Mon Jun 28, 2021 2:50 am

This topic is to list and curate exceptional channels on YouTube aimed at getting you past a lock, more or less. Because of the proliferation of these videos which are thorough, this simply makes more sense than spending time creating new ones.

This thread will be updated periodically and any videos that stand out as especially useful even on these amazing channels will be highlighted. Note that some of these channels also have great content dealing with other aspects of physical and digital security, but to avoid overwhelming the reader I'll make separate threads for those later. This will allow someone to instead approach the channels in a "What do I want to hone?" manner without having to wade through piles of information.

For the first pair of videos I'd like to bring to your attention, we go to The Modern Rogue.

This videos are perfect for the novice because they're aimed at the layman.

Key copying is typically a social engineering effort of sorts, although an opportunity may present itself where the operator may come into access with the key but for one reason or another cannot use it then and there. There are many other ways at doing this, but here's another tool for the box.

Today I'd like to highlight a short playlist covering the use of under the door tools, created by TheNotSoCivilEngr. This is a fantastic intro to a very effective bypass method that anyone is capable of.

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZapeDZDd-o&list=PLwxkGxLTPJTlxkqsmsrWOnHAudf4rLv9A
When even quicker methods don't work on a locked door you need to get through such as the traveler hook, cards or whatever, this should be the next available option to consider.

As a note to operators, these can be carried handily during the operation in a low profile bladder carrier along with other tools you won't need fast access to. I mention this as it's a cheap, readily available method that's great for carrying things like this that are somewhat long but light weight. The carrier won't add noticeable bulk to your profile like most packs will, keeping you ready to go through tight spaces when needed. Commercial UDTs can be coiled enough to fit inside pretty easily.

If commercial options are not available to you OR if you just want to try before you buy, it's pretty simple to make your own improvised UDT. Just cut a length of stiff wire and bend into shape. Use whatever cord you have available to connect to the end. Obviously, these lack the spring of a quality UDT but all that means is that it's not going to last as long from repeated use. They perform fine and are a good way to get familiar with the concept and practice in most situations for nearly everyone.

To anyone who adopts the tool and wants to get more mileage out of it, I highly recommend an air wedge from Amazon. They're usually under $20 for a pack of three and will allow you to create gaps under doors giving you more buildings the UDT is effective on.

There's plenty of buildings in my area vulnerable to this tool, I think. Might give it a go.

With the festivities over, we're back at it today with another lock video. This time I want to highlight a video from a guy who's clearly a novice approaching and shimming a padlock used on a very typical set up you are likely to encounter in a low security environment.

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAJo8FTk8dg
This guy is wrong about a lot of things he says and he clearly doesn't have a lot of practice, but that's exactly why I wanted to show you all this video. Between that and the real world setting, it's the perfect illustration that it doesn't take much to use these to quickly bypass a padlock using them. So long as the padlock isn't specifically designed to guard against shims which very few people bother to use (or even know any of this exists) anyone can do this. It's easy to see an expert picking a padlock on a table and think it's a great go to, but it's an entirely different feel when you're out at night forced to stand in a likely-illuminated position awkwardly trying to hold the lock, your wrench, and a pick all at the same time with zero freedom of movement.

Today we're going back to the UDT, this time to learn how they can be used to bypass deadbolts. I know some of you have had these ruin an entry.

Bypassing Deadbolts with a UDT

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqN6rkkx79A
This of course is easier said than done but after playing with the idea for a bit at home, it's definitely doable. The trick I've found is that once you know your tool is around the deadbolt, apply more pressure to make sure the metal is against the door itself and pull it into the deadbolt where you can begin to slowly nudge it into the unlock position.

If sound is a concern, you might also consider coating the ring of the tool to eliminate the scraping sound it would otherwise make against the door. One idea might be to hit it with spray adhesive before the operation and placing it into fluffed dryer lint to give it a felt-like property.

Time for locks 101 today. Most users will be familiar with "loiding", the current fad term for what's previously been known as carding, shimming, etc. However, new users who aren't familiar will find this your best intro to lock bypassing.

Door latch bypass basics!

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8T-L4SNGmU
Most relatively new installs make this trickier than it sounds, having tight tolerances, frame features or a supplementary deadbolt that make loiding by itself less useful. However, you're still going to find a surprisingly large number of doors vulnerable to this attack. Plus, for doors that might feature a locked handle and a deadbolt, you may still opt to shim the latch after opening the deadbolt with a UDT or ODT.

By the way, you might wonder at this point why I'm focusing on non-picking bypasses. That's because much like combat skills and IMTs, I feel that picking is an art most efficiently developed by practice, practice, practice. You can pick up lots of small tricks here and there from the various videos but there's far more of a curve involved than simply observing a different attack in action and trying it yourself. By all means, picking should be learned by anyone serious because sometimes it's the only thing that's going to work. Just be aware that if you're a beginner, you're at least a year out from being able to use the skill effectively during an operation.

Doubling up on locks again. First off, new channel has been added above: "∅" A lesser known but quality channel that focuses on picking, featuring some obscure locks.

That out of the way, we're going back to TheNotSoCivilEngr to look at over-the-door attacks. I've talked about it enough, let's take a look. Here are a pair of videos that should give you a good idea of the concept:

Over the Door Attacks!

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb0PFheN1hA
Door Knob Attacks: Brand New Tech!

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZBj5TKb67s
The value here is that sometimes of course the top may already have more of a gap, the gear is much more compact, and this allows for much more fuss free round knob attacking. Note that it does require a bit of practice to learn to get that loop over the handle/knob, and I find that there's much less feedback until the moment you have it secured into position.

Double sided sticky tape can potentially cause obvious problems but it's one of the best solutions for maximizing the ability of the film to get into tight spaces. One alternative that's thicker but grips way better without the risk of sticking to itself: hockey tape. Depending on your skills and loadout, it may be worth carrying two ready-to-go ODTs with the hockey tape version being the go-to as long as it fits.

One last trip back to NotSoCivilEngr for a video on air wedges before moving on elsewhere. They're written about a lot above, so what are they?

Air Wedges: Further Compromising Doors

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHnNsQ64JV8
Simple. Obviously, their functions can be mostly replicated using solid wedges and carefully shimming them into positions to create larger gaps instead, but they're not quite as handy. These easily slide into narrow gaps and can be inflated. They're faster and they're cheap. Only reason not to get one is if you're an operator lacking the ability to buy certain equipment online because of your living situation.

It should also be noted that these are good for a lot of other things as well, such as opening vehicle doors or even helping persuade a stubborn window to move up a little if it's stiff but not necessarily locked.

Today we're going to check out the LockPickingLawyer for a rare destructive padlock bypass. This is a method that has been previously discussed and I have a few problems with it but we'll get to that.

You’re Doing it Wrong... The REAL Double Wrench Method

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBSSA5ot0tA
And let's look at some supplementary videos.

The REAL Double Wrench Method Tested

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOSWXo9fpTI
And one on The Modern Rogue:

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OyydGOZrlc
Finally, credit where it is due... the OG:

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jJP0CcuJyE
So this method does work. The original style works on cheaper padlocks and the revised method can actually tear through some pretty strong locks. Here's the thing though. First, as stated it's a destructive bypass that leaves evidence and goes into muddy moral ground. Leaving evidence is a big deal. An operation done right goes totally unnoticed. There's no investigation. That's huge.

Second, nearly all locks this works on can be bypassed with shims or maybe even a shank.

There's no point in breaking a lock that's not on a hasp, so the room you have to work with is just barely enough to slip the two wrenches in. This limits the shackle type to being of a larger variety which is typical of the cheap stuff. Even then it's probably going to be more of a pain in the ass than you think, not to mention super noisy.

My last point I'll make is that as far as destructive padlock methods go, bolt cutters do it better.

So what's the point of this? It's a desperate last ditch. If there is some must-complete scenario and you cannot get access to shims or a bolt cutter but have to go through a simple padlock... it's an option albeit not a great one. Similarly, if you are in the right situation where you're out scouting and come across a "now or never" type of case where you find a couple wrenches and won't be able to approach the lock more prepared in the future it can be used.

Either way, the piece of knowledge is free and it's worth keeping in mind. You never know.

A lot of the padlocks around here are usually situated in little hidey-holes (especially on shipping containers) meaning you can't fit anything bigger than a key up there. Still, useful to know if you need to open a padlock in a pinch and don't have access to more specialised tools.
