Belt Kit

Code: Select all

http://i3.tinypic.com/6y1rq7s.jpg
Green: A small dressing in a "snap" box. The idea is in an emergency you can snap the box in two - meaning the box is always sealed until use. Also allowing easier access. [The box is covered in a sandwich bag to stop moisture getting in there]

The Pouch is the small black utility one.

Red: A first aid kit in a "BAE Systems" bag - this is a resealable and waterproof bag made of thick plastic. Its the type of bag that small 30 round boxes of ammunition come in. [Atleast in the British Army]

Then theres 2 glow sticks which normally come in useful. Be it testing the current of the water in a drain, or helping to keep a group together in a basement.

I also have my 2xAA Minimag - Used purely for a back-up. Along with 5xD Cell batteries and 3xAAA batteires. [For the Maglite, Headlamp, and larger back-up torch]

This pouch is the '58 Pattern Waterbottle pouch.

Blue: This is a 3xD Cell Maglite. Despite the picture - it is infact a funky green. Comes in useful for lighting purposes aswell as baseball games! :P

The maglite holster is NOT of the ring type, as these have lost me maglites when climbing and have also a tendancy to click when you run.

Pink: Standard '58 Pattern belt.

General kit

Code: Select all

http://i19.tinypic.com/869nz2q.jpg
Red: Hi-viz vest and Yellow Builders helmet. [Not shown: White Builders helmet]

Violet: Compact Camera Bag. Protected by a sandwich bag.

Green: Useful in situations when you're in a unfamiliar or looking for something in familar territory. [Say you have a grid reference from the internet. You plot it on a map. Find a landmark with a clear line of sight then take a bearing from that landmark on a map. Then use that bearing when you actually arrive on the ground.]

Pink: Baby Wipes. Most useful things ever.

Blue: Another Glowstick.

Light-blue: Madjack torch.

Orange: 6LED Headlamp. Has 4 settings; a)1LED, b)3LED, c)6 LED, d)3 flashing LEDs[emergency]. Have used this to light up tunnels before...

Yellow: Tripod for camera, and black tripod bag.

Aqua: Camelbak.

Clothing

Code: Select all

1. http://i6.tinypic.com/85ashgw.jpg
2. http://i17.tinypic.com/73ahk5d.jpg
3. http://i16.tinypic.com/80l4sxw.jpg
4. http://i15.tinypic.com/6ksa83b.jpg
1. THese are my combats - British DPM Issue ones, and some Black ones I picked up from a market.
2. Less conspicuous looking cargo pants, next to some lightweight and ripstop trousers I picked up from an outdoor shop.
3. More combat gear; Combat shirt, Combat Jacket and a Shemagh. [NOTE: In the pic is a OG shirt and OG jumper - They aren't meant to be in this pic - disregard them.]
4. Normal zipless hoodie with a large pocket to the front. Perfect colour, average looking and cheap.

Lighting

Code: Select all

http://i15.tinypic.com/6pqc51y.jpg
Aqua: Camo minimag with 3LED Nite-Ize upgrade. The upgrade has made it absolutely shit. It has next to NO light output. So I tape it to my tripod and use it for changing batteries when I'm trying to be stealthy. It has no effect really though.

Green:3 C Cell, Aluminium Cybalight. Very nice and quite weighty..

Yellow:3 D Cell Maglite, Green. Very weighty, Brilliant output - An ideal torch.

Red:2 D Cell Duracell, Rubber. Very durable, waterproof, quite bright. Pretty awesome.

Blue:2 D Cell Maglite, Black. Same as the 3 D Cell really.

Purple:24 LED metal torch, By TU. Durable, Nice and bright. Small aswell.

Light Blue: Madjack. Uses expensive batteries, and eats through them. But apart from that it is my ideal torch. Unfortunately its too bright for alot of situations - but this goes for the maglites aswell.

Black: 2xAA Minimag, Black. This is a standard one with the Nite-Ize tail cap - So it has a push button on it aswell as the focus ability.

Nice thread, and nice kit as well.

Could you post a pic of the 3 LED upgrade you use? i have a similar mod on one of my mini maglites, and it works pretty good. next time i'm in the local sporting goods store i'll check it out, cause knowing what brands are and aren't worth it is always a good thing, especially for people on a limited budget.

Heres a few beamshots:

Code: Select all

http://i10.tinypic.com/4zw6gt5.jpg
1. Nite-Ize laying flat on the floor, directed at the camera.
2. Standard 2 AA Mini-Maglite in the same position.

3. Nite-Ize lying flat, Approx 12. Inch under the camera. [My first Tripod length]
4. Standard 2 AA Mini-Maglite in the same position.

The torches both had the same brand of rechargeable batteries straight from a fresh charge. The Nite-Ize was so bad that I only noticed I had left it on when I went to take the batteries out - this was in a pitch black room.

Too be able to use it in worst case scenario conditions (No light at all), You want it to be about 3 inches from the thing you're trying to illuminate. So it really is VERY weak.

As for the official reviews - they are glowing! [Excuse the pun :P]

Heres the product - Its the blue one:

Alright, since everyone is posting their shit i guess i ought to post mine as well. I never realized how hard drawing little numbers next to everything in microsoft paint can be. but whatever.

My Tools -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear1.jpg
1. Not really a tool, but i'd already taken my other pictures when i remembered about them. My kneepads, old and beaten to hell. hopefully getting some new ones soon.

2. Multi-tools. One is an adjustable wrench with a few blades on the handle, the other two are part of a set, one "pocket knife style" the other "leatherman style".

3. Small monocular, i don't usually bring binoculars because of the size/cost, so this does the trick when i need to observe something at a distance.

4. A generic prybar, for when lockpicking and the hammer don't cut it.

5. Black duct tape. i like electrical tape a little better, but this serves the same purpose. great for homemade sheaths, hilt-wrapping, and covering up reflective material on shoes/backpacks.

6. The lockpicks go into the small black case, the small black case goes into the maglite. stealthy, eh?

7. Some of my maglites. The largest has a tri-bulb red LED upgrade i bought at Dick's, the smaller maglite has a regular bulb, and the penlight is a reliable backup.

8. Swiss Army brand pocket knife and clear plastic compass/magnifier/ruler. they have a nice leather case they both fit into, as well. i've taken them camping more times than opping, but probably the most reliable pocket knife i've ever had.

9. Standard hi-range walkie-talkie. Great for when you're working in separate teams.

10. A tiny hacksaw i found out in the woods on a hike. (seriously). occasionally comes in handy, but not part of my usual loadout.

11. Some thin wire - like the hacksaw, it occasionally comes in handy.

12. A smallish hammer, with most of the stainless steel covered in electrical tape. works like a charm to break windows covered in my duct tape.

13. Was once a rear view mirror in a van. i took it because i can hold the knob on the back between two fingers, and use the mirror to look around corners/over ledges without exposing myself. doesn't really see much use.

14. A screwdriver that holds three other screwdrivers. needed some modification to stop them from rattling around, but works great now.

15. Some first-aid kits i made. each one contains six band-aids, some wound-closure strips, a few cotton balls, and a tiny pair of medical scissors.

My knives -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear4.jpg
1. A stainless steel piece of shit i bought because it looked cool a while ago. right now it just chills in my bathroom, incase someone breaks in while i'm in the shower. eventually i'll get around to taking the blade out and making something useful out of it.

2. Homemade stiletto-like dagger. Great for stabbing, not much else.

3. The best $10 i've ever spent. Bought back when i was into woodcarving, this thing practically lives in my pocket now. made by "master knives"

4. My fury knife, well, actually it's my girlfriend's, but like i mentioned in the knife thread, she lets me use it. works great for prying and heavier tasks like that.

5. Another homemade dagger, however this one is balanced enough for me to be able to throw it. sticking distance - 8 feet.

6. A duplicate of 5.

7. Pocket knife with a serrated and unserrated blade. cheap and generic.

8. the non-generic version of 7.

9. Flashy twin-bladed folding knife i bought for $12. occasionally used as a backup, but not too much other than that.

10. A set of 12 throwing knives, perfect for those occasions when your house is being broken into by 12 burglars at the same time. sticking distance - 12 feet. (lol)

11. A pair of black throwing knives, the very first ones i bought. still my best. they're hidden in my kitchen at the moment, in case someone breaks in while i'm making waffles.

12. A pair of VERY small partially serrated daggers, they came with a behind-the-back sheath. you can buy them on ebay for under $10. Decent backup knives, and able to be thrown short distances. sticking distance - about 9 feet.

13. My favorite homemade dagger. made from a paint scraper when i was about 14, before i had any other real knives. my first opping "knife", in that respect, too. the blade is thin enough to be able to card some doors.

14. My most - carried opping dagger. it's cheap, easily replaceable, and i can throw it from about 7 feet. more of a fighting knife than anything else, but it saved my ass once a year ago.

15. A folding knife based on the stiletto pattern. I like the way it looks, so i carry it occasionally, just not on ops.

16. A switchblade, made to look like a regular folding knife. Was given to me on my 18th b-day.

17. My pride and joy. razor sharp, made by Linder, a german knife-company. worth just about as much as all of my other knives put together, it lives under my pillow. you know, in case anyone breaks in while i'm asleep. :P

Gloves -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear2.jpg
1. A new idea of mine, yet untested on ops due to the impracticality of using them on most of what i do. Armor grade leather bracers, for anyone who couldn't figure it out. only $25, too. before anyone flames - ever been in a knife fight?

2. A pair of heavy leather gloves with the liner ripped out, used as a shell over my fingerless ones when needed.

3. My favorites - craftsman brand mechanic's gloves, with an old pair of fingerless leather ones over them for improved grip and durability.

4. Fingerless gloves, made of some thick cotton-like material. probably my most-used gloves, because you don't lose any dexterity or coordination.

5. THICK black winter gloves i used back in NY for sub-zero temperatures.

6. Thin leather gloves i use every now and then, a little on the shiny side though.

Black Opping Clothes -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear6.jpg
1. My long sleeve under armor. warm in the winter, sam fishery in the summer.

2. A mostly-black hoody, with a black t-shirt over it to make it completely black. used for cold weather stuff. I'm in the market for a new one, as this one's had it's ass kicked quite a few times.

3. BDU pants, made of rip-stop material. they have a small tear in the crotch from where i almost lost my manhood on a barbed wire fence (just missed it and got my leg instead). I should probably sew it up before the next op, almost forgot about it.

4. Short sleeve under armor shirt. I usually use it in the summer for when it's raining, or just plain too hot/humid for long sleeve.

5. My trusty balaclava, which can be rolled up into a beanie-like hat.

6. A cloth i use to cover my nose/mouth on occasions when i don't want to wear the balaclava, or worn over the balaclava to improve breathing through the nose.

7. A pair of black cargo shorts, i've been wanting to try them out with a pair of baseball socks when it's hot out, hopefully next summer.

8. Black long-johns/thermal leggings. worn under BDUs when it's cold, or possibly with the cargo shorts.

Camo Opping Gear -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear5.jpg
1. A woodland camo bandanna, as an alternative to the balaclava.

2. Woodland camo vest, usually worn over the black hoody if it's extremely cold out and i don't want to be wearing all black.

3. Yellow/brown t-shirt, worn under the BDU jacket in summer, or over it if i'm working in a grassy/scrubland type area.

4. Woodland BDU jacket, i'm hoping to get some marpat or cadpat BDU's sooner or later.

5. Woodland BDU pants.

Bags/Carrying Equipment -

Code: Select all

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/therinthehand/Night%20Ops/gear/gear3.jpg
1. A black hiking backpack, all it takes is a little black duct tape and it's all set to bring. Seldom used.

2. Camo hunting backpack, never used on ops. I don't really take backpacks, because if i'm carrying large amounts of stuff, i'll just get a bag from the same place i got the stuff from.

3. A small black bag that folds up very compact, i carry it in a BDU pocket just in case i need to carry large amounts of small objects.

4. A bike bag that can be attached to my belt, occasionally used for when i need to bring more opping gear than usual.

5. Oilve Drab WWII ammo bag, used if i don't want to bring the black one (opping in heavy woodland scenarios).

And seeing as i forgot my gear belt, i'll update later with that, too.

Wow Therin The Hand, You had stuff listed that I didn't even know you had. Your collection must have grown a good amount since you left the homeland. But I must say everything was nicely laid out and easy to follow and you have one hell of a collection compared to anything I have. I plan to start stocking up and getting some more gear so I'm well equipped for your return.

Not gonna spam up the page with a ton of links and writing each photo has a comment explaining it, there's some ninja stuff mixed you can ignore if you wanna. Once I get back to my apartment (after vacation) I'll have more pics of everything else:

I am bored so I'll post my most carried equipment. I can't be bothered to gather up the rest of the shit I take with me and pose it for some pictures right now... maybe next time. As you can probably tell I like to travel light. Don't let the lack of equipment I usually take with me fool you, I can get into almost anything with it. It's all about knowing how to use what you have. That being said, I also have a shitload of specialized stuff I will take with me if I have a specific goal in mind: anything from pry bars to screw drivers to a multimeter to a full sized KaBar.

Image
A: Tritium wrist compass. Light and accurate with excellent night visibility due to the radioactive vials. Never needs to be charged up to light, unlike phosphorus lume.
B: Home made foldable lock pick set. Very durable and high quality. It has everything I need and more. I usually just use the hook and the S-rake. Those two tension wrenches are secured to it with a rubber band and they fit almost all the locks I have ever encountered. I like to carry spare tension wrenches because they are so easy to bend or lose.
C: Leatherman Wave multi tool. Good purchase, highly recommended. I have a spare Leatherman multi tool I tend to keep in my car, I have taken that one along with me as well.
D: LED torch with a home made slip-on red cover. It has an adjustable beam that's VERY bright if the red filter is not on it. I like the fact that the filter dims it just enough to have the perfect light output for ops.
E: Beater folding knife. That thing took more than it's fair share of abuse over the years but it still does the job. Used for light prying and cutting everything. That way I can keep my multi tool blades in good shape.
F: Automatic diving watch. Very durable and the lume will last me the whole night if I shine the flashlight on it for 30 seconds. It's always covered by sleeves so there's no risk of it giving away my position.
G: Leather gloves. Warm and comfortable.

One thing I forgot to include in the pictures is the balaclava that always comes with me. I wear it at all times rolled up like a toque. As far as my choice of clothing goes, it's dark solid jeans, shirt, sweater, jacket, etc. No camo for me, I love being able to "hide in plain sight" and be able to walk right on the street if the need arises. I do like wearing steel toed boots however (the short kind that doesn't restrict ankle movement). I also carry a roll of electrical tape (again, not shown). It's good for electrical work but also masking small lights such as the doorbell bulbs some people have. Pretty annoying to be lit up a little when trying to pick locks.

Image
I sometimes like to take this baton with me :). It can do some serious damage and is quite intimidating. I don't like taking a large knife as a weapon because stabbing someone and having to deal with murder is the LAST thing I would ever want to do. This I am not afraid to use.

Hey Psychlonic, what do you use the Analog Multimeter for with alarms?

EDIT: Is it for determining whether or not wires going to an alarm are active?

Well you picked a good time to ask I guess. Remember when I told you in the other thread that sometimes there will be a resistance check at the control panel? The multimeter is to measure resistance. Digital would be ideal, but analog is all I've got. It's a "just in case" procedure if you've got a lot of time to burn.

Gear 1...

Code: Select all

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6604/gear1o.jpg
1: Multitool with pliers, small LED, saw, blade, can opener and I don't know what the other two are for. Comes with a velcro pouch, which was bought seperately. I need a better pouch.
2: Smith & Wesson HRT9B full tang boot knife; 4.5 inch black-oxidised very sharp blade (about 3mm thick) with a fuller and a vase-shaped, rubber-coated ring-grip handle with a crossguard and a lanyard hole. Comes with a leather clip-on sheath, very silent and versatile. My favourite opping knife.
3: Nieto 182 combat knife; 5 inch blade that's partially serrated on one side with a non-reflective coating (a little bit thicker than my S&W) with a black rubber handle + lanyard hole. The leather sheath is a little bit loose, but I use this for daytime operations where sound isn't that big an issue.
4: Lockpicks, in no particular order. Got them from lockpicks.com, they don't ask questions.
5: 10x20 monocular + pouch.
6: Bandage + pouch, just in case.
7: Swiss Card (ignore the little black thing underneath it).
8: LED earlight, surprisingly bright.
9: LAM. Just bought it, havn't used it yet.
10: Compass for scanning doors (thanks for the tip Psyc).
11: Red LED, needs new batteries.

Gear 2...

Code: Select all

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6522/gear2.jpg
1: 15m nylon rope with knots at 40cm intervals (approximately) and 2 carabiners (or whatever you call 'em). One carabiner is tied to one end of the rope for easy attatchment to grapple surfaces (such as rafters), the 2nd one goes on the front of my belt while climbing so in case I lose my grip I can reach for the rope at my belt. They have a 2tonne strength limit, I think.
2: NVGs, from seben.com. Also needs new batteries, and I'd prefer a different facemask/headmount.
3: Blowgun/breathing tube. Havn't used it yet, but it's bound to happen someday.
4: Belt pouch + 2 loot bags (stored in the pouch until needed).
5: Camo belt pouch + 2 tubes of metsu-bishi for quick access (disguised as Skittles ).
6: Velcro pouch, don't use it that often.
7: Homemade tetsu-bishi.
8: Mylar blanket, havn't opened it yet.
9: Darts for detering persuers (tip protectors on in the pic, fins detached).

Gear 3...

Code: Select all

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/9048/gear3.jpg
1: Diving shoes, easier to take off/on than tabi boots.
2: Diving socks, thick & soft for silent indoor snooping.
3: Tabi boots, soles are thick enough to provide protection but thin enough to feel the ground beneath you and allow more flexibility. The split toe makes scaling fences seemingly effortless.
4: Navy-blue t-shirt mask. Also have an OD-Black t-shirt, but couldn't be bothered digging it up.
5: Ansell HyFlex gloves; dark, breathable, tight, thin, cheap, good grip, excellent!
6: Black cotton pants, very comfortable and quiet.
7: Dark grey longsleeve, tight.
8: Woodland pants (need some better ones).
9: Camo longsleeve. The pattern was good to begin with, but I made it better with some spraypaint and some vegetation for sillhouettes.

^Note: I don't carry all this equipment at once; if the mission requires it, I'll take it.^

Just curious, what type of compass is that? I've got one that looks identical and I wasn't too impressed with it, swivels back and forth trying to find north. Also has a harder time locking onto magnets and has to be much closer. For what it's worth, the one I've got says "Engineer".

Not sure exactly, it used to belong to "A. Personne" when they were in the cadets. Works pretty good though.

Negative, I acquired them here & there over the years (I hate online shopping). There's more around here somewhere...

Also got some multicam BDUs (probably the only set in Australia). Once I get my camera fixed I'll take some pics.

I have a similar one, bought for me about 5 years ago now as a gift for getting a rank as a cadet and competing in a skills competition. My dad seemed pretty familiar with them, being a soldier of the cold war era.

I can see how it works, twisting the panel over the compass to get the bearing like a Silva one - but flipping up the top and using the peice of wire to take a bearing off of a landmark; guess it gives it more accuracy.

I also have a few Silva ones. Will post updated gear in a minute.

ive recently found that i get quite hot when im wearing mine due to what im assuming is reduced airflow. this could also be because the temperature is rising as we come into spring. do u hav any of these problems with ur diving boots?

Not that I noticed, no. I usually wear some old shoes on my way to the AO and change into my diving boots when I get there.

AVE...

Part of my gear. Not all of it, because I lost some equipment in flooding accident and I didn't replace it yet...
You can see my monocular and cane. There is ElCrappo Multimiter with probes. Also some basic tools to overcome different obstacles. There are many fences that can be just unscrewed. And the snuff? For cleaning my nose before my night walks...

Will post up all gear later, but this is my generic gear.

1 - Puxing PX-888, Cheap Chinese Transceiver. Operates on PMR446, as well as business freqs. (400-470Mhz)

2 - Knee-pads, sometimes useful for service tunnels and lots of crawling

3 - Utility belt which, in this photo atleast, holds my 3xD Cell Maglite

4 - Magnum Combat Boots - years old, need new ones!

5 - Camera rucksack

1 - Binoculars + Hand Sanitising Gel

2 - Glowsticks, Laser Pointer, Headlamp, LED Cree Torch

3 - Nikon D300 dSLR

4 - Oops... Skipped 4 :P

5 - First Aid Kit, Foil Blanket

6 - Spare batteries, Small torch for looking of paperwork/setting camera up etc

7 - Gloves + Hat

Note - There is also a tripod secured to the bag, this is usually in a black tripod bag - and secured on via a bungee, in addition to the two tripod clips on the rucksack.

Edit:

Looking good. When are you getting the climbing/rappelling kit, though? :P

Seeing as my Paris trip may not be going ahead anymore, hopefully asap! To be fair, I've been saying that for a year now though... :P
