$100 gear challenge

Post by Ghost » Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:05 pm

OK, since this board seems to be lacking new topics, i've decided to come up with a challenge for you all. Imagine that a year ago, you swore to give up night opping (the reason for doing so is unimportant, use your imagination) and threw away all of the gear you have ever used for night opping, along with anything that you could use for night opping. no knives, lockpicks, flashlights, boots, gloves, or anything. You live happily for a year, ignoring that ache to return to the opping scene that is growing within you.

Then, out of nowhere, your old opping rival returns to your town, and calls you out - there is no question now, you must return to night opping to reclaim your place at the top of the pack. BUT - you have absolutely no gear, and only a $100 gift card (redeemable anywhere online) to use for purchasing gear.

Thus begins the challenge - you are going to be opping in urban, suburban, and rural settings, both indoors and outdoors. The season will be late spring/summer/early fall. you may or may not run into dangerous confrontations with other oppers... they might be friendly, they might confront you with weapons, or you might not see anyone at all, it will be impossible to tell until you resume night opping. So the question is, what do you spend your $100 on? you must get everything you need from online sources (link them here), and you must get all of your gear at once, before opping (this means no "i'll buy a hoodie and pants, then car shop for the rest of my gear).

I think you get the idea by now, so let's see your gear lists. what items do you bring, what do you go without, and the most interesting part here - who can put together the best online gear list for only $100. I'll be updating with my own list as soon as it's done.

Edit - round off prices, and ignore shipping for this just to keep things simple.

It took me a little longer than expected, but i managed to pull together a gear list for exactly $100. I had things almost done but i realized i'd forgotten both shoes and a belt, so i needed to redo everything. in the end, here's what i came up with -

I went pretty heavy on black items instead of camo, since it would work fairly well both indoors/outdoors as well as urban/rural, and tried to go with gear that would allow me to be quick, flexible and mobile, hence the underarmor shirt and tabi boots. I figured that it would be better to have gear based on mobility and speed rather than concealment, since using your natural cover and surroundings should be more than enough to conceal you in the first place.

Brown BDU Pants http://www.galaxyarmynavy.com/item-5985.asp $29
Black T-shirt http://www.polo-shirts.co.uk/Black+T-Sh ... t+T-shirts $4
Super Knife http://www.knifesupplycompany.com/sk562.html $12 (just because I used this before and it worked for me)
Green Hoodie http://www.motifs.co.uk/products/Fruit% ... t-p745.htm $17
High Top Ninja Tabi http://www.amazon.com/Ninja-High-Top-Ta ... B0000C4JXX $29
LED Flashlight http://www.tradestead.com/1w-bright-led ... _p701.html $6
Woodland Bandana http://www.brandsonsale.com/woodcambanwh.html $1
Flathead Screwdriver http://www.amazon.com/System-Slotted-Bi ... 87&sr=1-23 $2
Rubber Dot Gloves http://www.saraglove.com/familydetails. ... &varHPDD=1 $1

Went for a light weight brown/green thing. The colors are general colors that never really "don't work" in any one place. I never used too much gear as I mostly hop roofs and explore fenced in compounds. I feel I'm more about skill and technique than gear so I didn't try to hard to find the lowest prices on stuff. As Therin put it, mobility is a high priority on the gear list. I realized no belt but that usually isn't a problem unless I deliberately buy baggy. Bandana is combined with the hoodie for a mask and can be used for whatever on the side. The knife is small and can clip into the pocket, I used to own one like it, and it's a good small all around knife. The compact screwdriver is for prying and all that, and the light for lighting. I don't usually wear gloves but if I'd start over I'd grab some of these I've been using some to dumpster dive and they can take a beating, I'd probably dye them after a while or let them get dirty as I don't like wearing white but they're be in a pocket most of the time anyway.
