I stumbled across this Video involving some Mexicans using Carpet Shoes to move across the border without leaving much footprint; might serve useful if you were ever in a Desert environment.

Can also be used for silencing footsteps.

You can buy shoe protectors which are rubber, have a good grip and zip on over your shoes and have different track marks, when your finished you could just burn them, ditch them or keep using them.

Even better. You don't lose grip that way.
