I bought one of these years ago and it works as advertised. It's a different model than the one shown in the pic but either way, they work and they are good for apartment doors , especially after the lock has been picked , so that you don't walk into a bad situation. Another option is a digital snake camera that you can get at Lowe's or auto supply stores and these can be used with any door that has a mail slot or you can drill a hole in a wall / door and take a peek with one of these.

Biohazard has explained to me his use of these, just as a second opinion on the matter. They apparently work pretty well and take a picture clear enough to tell what's going on. They can be slipped under garage doors and such as well to see what's inside. You wouldn't want to worry about it as standard operating equipment but when you have a general idea of what you're getting into and feel the need, it would be something worth considering.

The snake cam can also be used to help open safes but requires drilling a hole in the safe and then inserting the camera tube. If positioned above a false ceiling or hiding in a closet , the snake cam can allow the operative to know that the coast is clear before exiting a hiding place. If above a false ceiling, make sure to make your hole in the false ceiling panel ahead of time, you don't want shaving, debris falling onto someone's head or being on the floor ; also , position the snake cam near ceiling lighting so that it is hard to see by people walking by. You also need to be aware that the snake cams usually dont use night vision technology and will shine a light so that the snake cam can "see", this means that it is vital to turn off the light if using the snake cam for surveillance. If using the snake cam to look inside a safe on the other hand, you will be glad a light is available. Other options, besides the mail slot or under the door, is the doggy door. They are also good at windows , you can look into a window without exposing your head. Do also be aware that the viewing screen or display will light up and you need to be careful that this light doesn't light up your face as you are looking at the screen and allow someone to see you in the dark.
