I'm not sure you're exactly qualified to tell someone what gear to spend $600 on.

Just a reminder, try not to double/triplepost.

As for the list, i'm going to be putting a basic list of my own. In the spirit of generating more content, i'd highly encourage anyone else to post what they would suggest a new opper get to start out with, provided that opper doesn't mind spending a little money. Here's my list for another example: (note - i've included a pair of boots and a pair of sneakers on the list, most people tend to like one or the other).

Site: BDU.com
Boots: Men's Converse 8" Rapid Response SZ
-OR-
Shoes: Men's Thorogood 4" Night Recon Athletic Oxford CT
Belt: Blackhawk Universal BDU Belt
Gloves: Blackhawk HellStorm SOLAG 1/2 Finger Light Assault Gloves
Head Covering: Blackhawk HellStorm Lightweight Balaclava w/ Nomex
Shirt: Propper TAC.U Combat Shirt (ATACS-FG)
Pants: Propper Poly / Cotton Ripstop BDU Pants (ATACS-FG)
Total: $249.94

Site: Amazon.com
Knife: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools S14-N Pentagon
Multitool: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool
Light + Upgrades: MAGLITE M2A016 AA Mini Flashlight, Black
Nite Ize LRB-07 3-LED Bulb Upgrade/Replacement for AA Mini Flashlight
MAGLITE AM2A016 Mini AA Flashlight Accessory Pack
Total: $130.99

Site: Southord.com
Lockpicks: Eight Piece Lock Pick Set With Metal Handles - MPXS-08
Total: $29.95

Grand total: $410.88
Starter list includes everything i consider to be the "basic" tools of a beginning opper, and of suitable quality. Many of the items i have either used, or still use on my own ops. Can you find cheaper gear? Of course. Can you find better gear? Sure. This is just the balance between cost and quality that i think is best for a new opper with an average disposable income in my area.

I wouldn't know where to begin. I can suggest a list of basic kit but as far as prices go it really depends where you live and how you shop.

General interest.

Heck, I don't need a reason.

Would me posting be worth it if there is a bit of overlap with Ghost's?

BDU.com
Boots - Rocky C4 Trainer
Jacket - ATACS FG Propper Poly / Cotton Ripstop BDU Coats
Shirt - Green Undershirt
Pants - ATACS FG Propper Poly / Cotton Ripstop BDU Pants
Gloves - Blackhawk HellStorm SOLAG 1/2 Finger Light Assault Gloves
Head - Blackhawk Shemagh
Total - 266.95

Amazon.com
Knife - Blackhawk UK - SPF Dagger
Light - Energizer 3 LED Headlight
170.39

Grand total - 437.34

I know there is some overlap between Ghost and I but I hope it will convince others to buy the gear we both suggest and trust us, we LOVE gear. I mine ended up coming up for more, even with less due mostly to the cost of the dagger and my boots were more expensive.

I applaud this thread.

I am quite impressed with your ability to find a list this expensive on just clothes, two knives, lockpicks and a light.
I'm not sure if I could assemble a kit this expensive without including NVG's.

Budget list: Wal-Mart underarmor knock-off for undergarments, cheap surplus camo in a pattern approrpriate for your area, any dark footwear with a soft sole, leather palmed glove, and a ski mask or balaclava you can breathe well in. Should cost around $100. Skip the knife, shop around and you can find a Leatherman in the $50 range which will perform many tasks you need. How many people have needed to fight with their field knife on an operation? Zero in about a decade, now. Find a cheap $10 multi-LED flashlight that takes AA batteries - available at any hardware store and then some. They're rugged, aluminum bodies and rubber o-rings. Take clear red plastic or red saran wrap to make the beam red. Buy a hardened flat file and make your own picks and tension wrenches from hacksaw blades, sweeper bristles, and the like. They'll be higher quality than what you find online and cheaper.

Shop to get things in your hands ASAP and you're spending maybe $200. Slowly acquire things as you go just to get out the door and upgrade later as you rack up experience, I'd say $100 will get you what you need. A beginner has NO USE for $600 worth of equipment. In fact, the clothing and flashlight are the only real mandatory items at first and the flashlight only so your trips are worthwhile and you can explore in pitch black. Buy lock picks later and practice at home until you are good enough that it's a useful skill in the night. Multitool is straight-forward and most of us can use them no problem for the obvious uses they fill.

To be fair, I'm sure most of us have more gear than we'll ever need, be it multiple pairs of op clothing & accessories (such as masks, footwear & gloves) as well as several tools and equipment that never see use.
