Books/documents

I thought it would be good if we had a topic where we could share/recommend/request books and other documents somehow related to opping.

I've found this translated KGB guide, which has a good section on movement.

We have a Library section with plenty of reading material. Are you talking about non-electronic literature? Because that would be useful.

I just thought of a topic where we could talk about any kind of reading material that is related to opping.

What does the rest of that KGB guide cover? There are a bunch of field manuals in the Library, but IMHO they aren't as useful as they seem. I've found that user-written guides like WotS tend have more pragmatic advice.

And... where exactly does one find a translated KGB guide?

I couldn't attach the file, so there's a link:

https://archive.org/details/KGBAlphaTeamTrainingManual

It covers physical training, hand to hand combat, movement and obstacle crossing, some stuff about health and penetration of buildings. I recommended it because it covers stealth and overcoming obstacles.
It's from Paladin Press, I just downladed an archived version of it.

Even though it's got some good info I agree with you about user guides, they are usually better because they focus entirely on stealth.

It's good that you mentioned WotS, because I would be interested in one of the books referenced there, called "Night Movement - How to fight at night". Does anyone have that?

Ah, good ol' Paladin Press. Providing knowledge of the black arts since 1970.

Wait, we seriously don't have that in our library? It's quintessential reading for night ops.

Both of these have been posted, thanks gents. https://nightops.net/wiki/doku.php?id=books:books

EDIT: this reminds me, a generous user sent me a whole bunch of Paladin Press books a while back. Obviously I haven't gone through the whole thing yet, but I can upload some to the library if something strikes your fancy. I'll attach a file list below, anything strike your fancy?

Also, I could use a hand curating the library, including sorting through new material and making collections of the quality stuff. If anyone's interested, get in touch.

If you want me to sort through those files I can give it a whirl. What do you need done exactly?

Some of this shit is right alongside the anarchist cookbook IMO. Not that all of it has completely wrong info necessarily, it's just often incomplete or written in an otherwise misleading way. They can also seriously undermine how easily it is to create certain things in today's world. For instance, "Poor Man's James Bond 3 - Silencers". It's extremely easy to make quality baffle suppressors or even monolithic designs (and always has been, it's just that the public domain of suppressor design knowledge wasn't really a thing in the 80s or prior).

Also, for a good laugh go find yourself a video of Kurt Saxon and take a look at his hands. Despite what he or anyone else might try to say, blowing off your fingers isn't par the course for handling explosives. That's called a fuck up. Do you want your instructions coming from that guy, especially when they were written around the same time he blew those fingers off? Meaning the info is at least incomplete if the author himself lost appendages because of it.

The structure here reminds me of the massive RogueSci torrent that used to do rounds BTW. Is that the case?

Could be from that 75GB collection, although it was sent to me independently. The collection is still around btw, there are at least two people seeding it:

I've always treated the library as kind of a mix between &T and the "keep circulating the tapes" principle. IMHO there is no information that is inherently "bad", it's on the reader to interpret and understand what's legit. Of course if the reader has shitty judgement, maybe they deserve to lose a finger or two. At the very least, that dude's books might be a manual of what NOT to do.

What I wanted to do was get some knowledgeable people to curate collections of quality files. Sort the wheat from the chaff a bit. After all, I'm more of a janitor than a librarian.

I have a pair of glasses and an ugly vest. I guess that qualifies me as a librarian.

I can't argue that, my personal library is the same way and I have all of those ebooks. Why? Mystery for the ages, maybe it's just completeness sake, or the nostalgia of an era before you could find this stuff on YouTube channels. Speaking of YouTube and libraries, it's not "documents" necessarily but I highly recommend everyone get themselves a good flash video downloader addon and save videos of certain value. They're tearing down more and more videos and the demonetization politics game they're playing is forcing a lot of good people out. I probably already have stuff that's no longer up since there's so much content on there and YouTube just silently pulls things.

There's no way to tell for certain at this stage, but I honestly think we're in an information golden age right now and it's not going to last forever. So I'm saving, I consider it a worthy investment for the future.

So I was thinking today, to what full scope would you like the library to be? I could contribute quite a bit, maybe when time allows we can chat it out and help each other. I wouldn't mind "propagating" my library so to speak to keep the files online and available in case anything happens to me storage devices they're on and of course you and the site would benefit as well by having them available.
