Hunting camouflage is designed to hide you from colourblind animals, whereas military camouflage is designed to hide you from perceptive humans. Hunting camo can be effective although the patterns are typically suited to a very specific type of foliage/terrain.

If by "hunting camo" you mean patterns like mossy oak and realtree, they're peerless in their respective environments that they are designed for outside of 3D suits or augmenting your camo with surrounding resources. The problem is that as Xanatos mentioned, they can be pretty specific and some are really awful if taken where they don't belong. Some are really versatile and blend into multiple areas acceptably, you'd have to really look around.

What needs to be considered is that camouflage serves a two-fold function. The obvious is that you blend in with the environment more, but first and foremost the main function - especially with military patterns - is to break up the human outline and help the edges fade into the background a little. To force others to see a broken pattern instead of a defined head and shoulders, or even limbs. It might not seem like much, but it can go a long way. Someone who is not actively expecting contact can and will question what they just saw. If you see a human silhouette moving around, it's not such an uncertainty.

Animals in the wild are far better at perceiving than humans are for the most part. This has been my experience anyways, having spent plenty of time trying to remain hidden from both while hunting and going out on night operations. If you can slip past an animal, you can slip past a human. Not all game is colorblind in fact most are not. As with military camo giving you that slight edge over solids with humans, letting that doubt and difficulty identifying set in, hunting patterns take it a step up for animals and make them think nothing of you where as a military pattern may not be sufficient.

No option makes you entirely invisible. You still can't realistically expect to walk in front of people without cover and have them not see you. If you remain stationary and near anything broken up and with layers including foilage, rubble, dirt mounds, etc. though, you can expect a higher chance of remaining unseen with a camouflage on.

All of this said, while there is probably a pattern that will let you remain unnoticed in most terrain around your area it might not be significant or even worth the time nor finance. The appropriate military pattern is not only very effective at night, but probably cheaper and easier to acquire. If you just so happen to have a good hunting pattern though, try it.
Knowledge alone is not power, it is the potential for power. That potential can only be unlocked through applying that knowledge and realizing the skill.
