night-ops.net has a freesite!

If you aren't familiar with Freenet, it's basically a decentralized, redundant, encrypted, and highly anonymous network, with darknet capabilities. Freenet is composed of many "nodes", each of which stores and serves content that has been uploaded or published to Freenet. So, if you upload a file, it's sent out to be mirrored on several different nodes. When you want to retrieve a file, the network of nodes are searched for pieces of the file until the whole file is downloaded. The more popular a file is, the more nodes will have it mirrored. Freenet is interesting because all communications are encrypted and innocuous - it's hard to tell you're using Freenet at all, and if you're found out it's nearly impossible to track specific files back to you. Furthermore, because it's decentralized, if you upload a site it gets mirrored by other nodes - you can take your node down and the site will still be accessible. Please see http://wiki.freenetproject.org/FrequentlyAskedQuestions if you'd like to know more.

Obviously, Freenet goes hand-in-hand with night ops. Should this site go down, the community needs a safe place to regroup. To this end, I have established a freesite. Once you are running Freenet, point your browser to

Code: Select all

http://127.0.0.1:8888/USK@3ITlEPS763nNUNNP69B62nGn8P06B9jlZ7WgmaDB~T4,mY-cA~vdc4R90Xv67wqPQ3fqsZH-ZFZqWn9KCevJNe4,AQACAAE/night-ops/0/
to access the freesite. Eventually I'm going to mirror all of the files hosted on this site on Freenet, and I'll start a discussion forum on FMS or Frost.

If you want to participate, install Freenet (http://www.freenetproject.org) and check out the night ops freesite. Remember, the more popular a file is, the more it is mirrored and the more likely it is to successfully download.

Just installed Freenet and going to get into this. Why aren't we doing this anyway? Are we all getting so old and accustomed to the status quo that we're afraid of change? Decentralized internet with freenet and encrypted chat would eliminate so many of our security concerns here.

Just don't expect too much - it's pretty slow and cumbersome. I don't think the freesite is even available anymore, I will try to reinsert if I can find the original file...

Also, it looks like Freemail is really the way to go for secure communications, rather than FMS or Frost.

Yeah I couldn't get the site up, so you may be right.

You should try setting up an identity if you have a node up and running. We can exchange keys over FMS.

What I'd really like to do is make the library available over Freenet, that would be a good starting point. Not that anybody would see it...

To anyone else reading this, guys this really isn't complicated stuff. You download Freenet, hit the icon and it loads in the browser you're already using. From there, it's kind of like Internet 1.0 from the 90s with a different style of URL system... as a really rough comparison. Browsing the freesite links, most were overwhelmingly porn sites lol. But if you know a site, you just enter the key into the appropriate "address bar" and it accesses it. I think it's a really cool concept and after one fully learns everything (still working on it here) it seems just as easy to browse through as the current internet structure. As Secant has noted, it's slow at times and it's simple, but it works. For anything fringe it's perfect.

I'll get an identity set up here in just a second.

EDIT - This is pretty badass, actually! I almost want to set up a cheap laptop or something with this with absolute maximum security.

You may find this freesite useful if you haven't seen it already.
