Tails Linux

Post by NachtReiter » Wed Jul 02, 2014 4:04 pm

I have a special setup I'm using now on my computer. On Windows, I have Google Chrome, and a Google account all linked up to my real data, so that everything I do is tracked by Google and pinned to me personally. This way, I am kept on my toes and reminded not to do dumb shit that I don't want the NSA knowing about.

For crazy places like this (not everything here is illegal, but I'd rather the NSA didn't get the drift that I'm interested in sneaking through the night), I have Tails Linux on a USB stick now.

Here I'm going to tell you how to set that up. All you need is a USB flash drive.

Step one: Download the Tails ISO from here: tails.boum.org

Step two: Download UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer): http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Step three: Insert your USB stick, and open UNetbootin

Step four: Select the "ISO Image" Radio button at the bottom of the program

Step five: Browse to and select the Tails ISO

Step six: Ensure that the drive with your USB stick is selected

Step seven: Run UNetbootin

And there you are. Now all you have to do is reboot your computer with the USB stick plugged in. When your BIOS screen comes up, hit whatever key you have to to get into it. Find the boot override controls, and boot to the USB stick. There may be two listings for the stick, with one preceeded by "UEFI:" Don't pick that one because it doesn't work - pick the other one.

Now you'll be on Tails Linux and basically invisible on the internet. Since it uses TOR, you'll also have access to TOR hidden services, which you can reach by typing this into your URL bar:
[ kpvz7ki2v5agwt35 . onion ] Minus the spaces.

(yes, I have that committed to memory).

Enjoy!

Mind explaining what exactly Tails Linux is a bit more?
We are all books containing thousands of pages and within each lies an irreparable truth.

Yeah I guess that would have been helpful... lol sorry. Tails stands for "The Amnesiac Incognito Live System."

Amnesiac - Tails does not write to anything but RAM, which is wiped on shutdown. No files are ever recorded or altered in any way. There is no way to detect that someone used Tails on a system.

Incognito - Tails is configured with many, many tools to remain totally hidden on the internet. The default browser uses TOR, and there is also an I2P control panel included for that service. There is also Pidgin for encrypted chat.

Live System - It runs off a USB stick, so that no files are ever altered on your hard drive.

It's basically a high-security internet access console. You use it to browse the web securely and anonymously.

Thanks, I think many of us will find that tool useful.

Tails does fine. It's not exactly reliable, not even close, but it adds another layer of protection. Unless you have a persistent volume set up, it becomes a pain in the ass. RAM wiping is unreliable. Nothing is fully secure, there's always a hole here and there. Any mediocre forensic investigation would reveal the use of tails. Ipredia and Whonix don't work too good either.

So, with all of this security shit going on...
The NSA doesn't give two shits about us. They couldn't care less. We are just kids who like to explore shit at night - not drug dealers, not burglars, not hitmen. We are the smallest fishes in the pond, if you could even call us fishes. We're more like microorganisms.

We aren't important. Nobody cares about what we do. The DEA doesn't care. The CIA doesn't care. The FBI doesn't care. The NSA doesn't care. SÄPO doesn't care.
Stop being so paranoid. We are on the clearnet. We are on public space, we aren't even trying to hide. Unless one of us says "My name is John Johnson, and I just broke into a private facility and stole shit. Here's the proof pictures and timestamps", nobody will care.

Criminals don't hang out here. Even if they do, they don't talk about it that much. This isn't a site about burglary - everything we do here is theoretical. As far as any investigation on this site went, all they concluded was "meh, it's just a bunch of wannabe ninja urbanexers. No need to investigate further".

If the NSA wants to conduct surveillance on you, they will. And there's nothing you can do to stop them from doing it. If you are a big fish, they will, undoubtedly, track you. Tor? Doesn't matter. Nodes make the tracking process harder, not impossible. Tails is made to serve as a sandbox environment, fulfilling no other function than a condom that wipes sperm off itself. Still doesn't prevent you from being tracked, if they really try. However - they won't be spending this much time and resources to track us. Google has certain alert mechanisms that help security organizations get their thumb on people before they do anything stupid. If you google "lockpick set", "black disposable clothes" and "aluminum baseball bat" in sequence, you will be put on an automatic watchlist. Not even that, too many people search for that kind of thing. If you google "how to blow up a school", then maybe you will get somewhere.

Suspicious activity is monitored. If deemed a serious threat, someone knocks on your door. That almost never happens. They will not spend time tracking the browsing habits of some kid.
They don't care about your freaky rape porn. They don't care about your keyboard anarchy. They don't care if you enjoy being a ninja on your spare time. They don't care if you download a large amount of illegal reading material. It's not worth tracking small potatoes like us. They don't go for jaywalkers, the go for Al Capone. We are the jaywalkers. Would you care if an ant was planning word domination? I wouldn't be.

Don't be so paranoid. If you have a lot of freaky porn and 155 editions of the anarchist cookbook on your computer, all you need to do is either use truecrypt or pour afterbirth on your hard drive to prevent any efforts of a forensic investigation.
Don't take it too seriously, you're not coming out of it alive.
